Inverness is regarded as the capital of the Highlands and is located in the northern section of Scotland. The history of Scotland would not be the same without the influence that this city has played. It is history is filled with historical battles and played in major role in the history of Scotland. One such battle occurred between the British government and the Jacobites on April 16, 1746. It is believed that this battle occurred right outside of Inverness.

Geographically the city is located in part of the great Glen. This area consists of a series of Glens or valleys in Scotland that run from Inverness to Fort William. A geological fault runs through this area and is known as the great Glen fault. This bisects the Scottish Highlands and the Northwest Highlands. It is this geographic structure that played a great significance in the Jacobean uprising of the 18th century.

The River Ness runs into the Moray Firth here at Inverness. The Firth is the largest inlet in Scotland and lays North West of the city. This size and location of the inlet has played a crucial role in shipping and transportation. The inlet and the geographical location of this city is a major factor that contributed to the history of the city.

It is a medium-sized city with a population of about 54,000 people; Inverness is currently one of the fastest-growing cities in Scotland and all of Europe. It is anticipated that this area will see a population growth of 40% over the next 20 years.

Part of Inverness role in the history of Scotland occurred in the year 565. It was during this year that St Columba encountered King Brude. The king was residing in a fort on the western edge of town. This fort was a Vitrified fort, meaning it was comprised of walls that were supported by the natural terrain. There are remnants that are popular tourist attractions today. The Old high church and graveyard resides in the area known as St Michaels Mount and marks a significant area in local history.

Another early significant event in the area was the construction of the castle b y Malcolm III. Malcolm III constructed his castle at the location where a previous castle stood. It was this area where his father Duncan I was murdered by Macbeth. This event played a rich role in the early history of Inverness prior to the Scoto-Norman period that marked the middle ages.

Invernesses history is made up of many other similar events. These events helped to shape the area and the country of Scotland in general. These events and the associated historical structures are a few of the great attractions that make this area a great tourist destination.
