The UK is famous for having many ancient and unique towns. Fort William must be one of the most beautifully located urban centres in all of the British Isles. It is situated on the shores of Loch Linnhe at the foot of the Great Glen in the Scottish Highlands. For the people in the Lochaber district it is their main market town. You will find it a place rich in beauty and history.
It is not a surprise that so many tourists are attracted to the region. If you base yourself in Fort William you will have quick access to the famous sights of Glen Finnan, Glen Coe, and Ben Nevis. The latter is Scotland and the UK’s tallest mountain, stretching up to a snowy peak at 1,344 metres. You will not be disappointed by a visit during any season. In the summer time the weather can be perfect for exploring the various trails and treks. If you choose a winter visit you can take advantage of excellent ski fields.
The town itself stands out against the majestic backdrop of Ben Nevis. You can find many small squares and pedestrianized streets to leisurely explore and stroll along. The people in Fort William exude a typical Scottish friendliness; your only problem will be trying to decipher the local accent!
If you have time you should take the opportunity to visit the West Highland Museum. There is an excellent collection of artefacts, picture, archives, and photographs that will help you to understand the history of settlement in the Scottish Highlands going back more than five thousand years.
A trip to Lochaber and Fort William is not complete without a visit to a Whisky distillery. Scottish whisky is world famous for its quality; there are a number of distilleries which offer sampling and tasting tours. The only problem you will have is that you may need to rest for the remainder of the day!
There is no better way to get rid of a hangover then to head for the great outdoors. With such majestic scenery on the doorstep of Fort William it is easy to experience nature at its best. There are options for mountain biking, paragliding, and trekking. For the lazier visitor a trip on the Nevis Range gondola can bring breathtaking views. From the top of Aonach Mor you will be able to see a panorama that includes the Inner Hebrides, the Great Glen, as well as the ever present Ben Nevis.
In the evening you can unwind at one of the many restaurants, bars, and cafes that are dotted throughout Lochaber and Fort William.
