A large town located in Buckinghamshire is Milton Keynes. It is surprising that this only qualifies as a large town because it was originally designed to be a city. However the town did not reach the required size and was not granted city status. The main purpose of Milton Keynes was to help house the population that was crowding London in the 1950s. Besides housing the London overspill it also was to be an important regional center.
Originally much of Milton Keynes was farmland and used for agriculture. Some of the earliest artifacts have been dated back to the Bronze Age. Before the town was expanded a full archaeological survey was done and many artifacts from Medieval times, Anglo-Normal, Iron Age, Roman-British, Anglo-Saxon and the industrial revolution.
The plan to build this town was recognized internationally and many famous architects were attached to the project including John Winter, Richard MacCormac, Ralph Erskine, Norman Foster, Martin Richardson and Henning Larsen. A street hierarchy was used when designing the town and on a map you can see the different grid squares.
Some interest activities in Milton Keynes are the theatre which is one of the most popular outside of London. You can see musicals, opera and much more. The Gallery has free exhibitions that mainly focus on contemporary art. The town has its own orchestra that gives shows throughout the year.
A great historical home to visit is the beautiful Woburn Abbey, the house of the Duke of Bedford. Inside are several collections of furniture and porcelain. There are also many rooms that can be used for events and functions. Woburn Abbey has a safari park and golf club and extensive gardens that can be explored. There is something for everyone in the family.
About 20% of the entire city contains green spaces and there are many lakes and parks that can be explored. If you like wakeboarding or dragon boat racing then you should stop by Willen Lake. This park also contains a Peace Pagoda. There are beautiful beds of wildflowers and other plants that can be viewed on walks through Shenley park, Linford Park and how park.
The Grand Union canal runs directly through the center of town and you can enjoy a tour on a cruiser or narrow boat. You can also enjoy their own version of “Central Park” at Campbell Park which is almost in the center of town.
